Over the past few years making a career as a dental assistant has gained enormous popularity in the United States. In fact, it has emerged as one of the few professions in the health care industry that has pulled the interests of many people in last few years. The tasks of a dental assistant include patient care, as well as office and laboratory responsibilities. While the specific duties of a dental assistant differ depending on the work setting, training and experience level, all dental assistants primarily work closely with dentists to make sure that each dental process gets completed effectively.

Job Description

The main responsibility of dental assistants is to help dentist execute different dental procedures. In most of the cases, responsibilities generally revolve around managing tasks that require to be done proceeding to a dental procedure, such as a filling, crown, ties or tooth extraction. Adding to this, it is also the responsibility of assistant to clean the chair and equipment so that it is ready for the patient. The other responsibilities also include: sterilizing, washing instruments and apparatus and informing patients about postoperative and basic dental health.

Apart from all this, dental assistant who works in the office is equally responsible for scheduling and reminding patients of appointments, checking patients in, managing bills and payments, and ordering dental materials. It is important to understand that the profile of a dental assistant is not similar to a hygienist. It differs significantly from hygienists. In fact, hygienists are licensed professionals with clinical duties.

Job Prospect

The job outlook for dental assistant is excellent and in next few years the field is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2016. As per the recent observations, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that this profession will be the third fastest growing occupation. It is projected to be one of the fastest growing jobs over the next several years. Several job openings will arise due to the growth of employment and the need to replace transferring assistants, retiring assistants or others. Definitely, this is great news, especially for those who are just entering or looking forward making career in this field. While assistants can choose to complete dental assistant training programs, this is one occupation for which on-the-job training is common.

Decent Salary

In terms of salary, this profession also offers a decent income. As a general benchmark, these are the most recent salary figures for dental assistants in the United States:

50% of dental assistants earn between $29,785 and $36,564 per year. The top 10% of dental assistants earn over $39,400 per year. Dental assistant hourly rates generally start at $11.55 straight out of school and can exceed $20 with experience.

Though, the pay for dental assistants varies based on experience and qualifications. The compensation levels for dental assistants also fluctuate from state to state. This is primarily due to the differences in cost of living and other local factors. Another factor that influences dental assistant salaries is industries like Dental Laboratory, Orthodontics, Cosmetic and Dental Prosthetic Service. As per the current scenario, comparing Dental Assistant Salary by Industry shows that assistants who work in cosmetic dentistry tend to earn higher salaries.

The salary of a dental assistant also depends mainly upon the responsibilities associated with the specific position. In some states, dental assistant earn salaries equal to other health care personnel with similar training and experience such as medical assistants, physical therapy assistants and occupational therapy assistants. Though assistants can also expect to see an increase in their dental assistant salaries as greater experience is acquired.

Today selecting a profession as a dental assistant has actually generated tremendous scope for professional development. If you have the qualities required to be a dental assistant and want a decent paying job, getting a degree or certificate in dental assisting is surely one if the best ways to secure your future in this profession.

It is always great when someone decides to go back to school and learn a new trade. This is especially true of individuals who have been in the workforce for several years in a minimum wage job and are looking for a rewarding career. Dental assistants schools are a way to help them break free from that minimum wage lifestyle and become a dedicated professional. But do you know the difference between the types of programs and colleges?

A big trend is for college dental assistant programs to be offered. These are traditional four year colleges that offer dental hygienist and assistant courses. A hygienist is someone who has taken more classes and can assist in oral surgery.

They are not surgical technologists so make sure you do not confuse them because you do not want to get through the program and suddenly find out that you have made a mistake. You can, however, get your certification and later go back and take additional courses to get those degrees and become certified surgical techs or hygienists.

Some people elect to take four hour programs each day for a year. This works well if you have to work full time and cannot take the time to devote to a full class load. The down side is that the program takes longer. You will also have to factor in the time for internship at the end of the program.

Usually, an internship requires that you be on the job for a full eight hours each day. Dental assistants schools that are online can save you time because they allow you to do your coursework from home at your own pace.

You can find financial aid to help offset the cost of tuition and books for the program. You will have to provide your income information and your income tax forms from the previous year. The financial aid officer of the school can help you fill out the forms.

Any excess aid can help you make your bills while you are in school. You may not be eligible for federal student aid, such as Pell Grants, if you are attending an online school, so take this into consideration before applying.

Dental assistants schools are a great way to change the outcome of your life. You no longer have to be confined to a job that you hate. You can learn a valuable trade that is important to the healthcare system. Once you complete the dental assistant program you will leave the school a certified dental assistant and start your new career and life.

A registered dental assistant with the American Dental Assistants Association is someone who has paid his or her dues and is a member of the organization. He or she is a certified medical technician or is a student training to become a medical technician, an orthodontic assistant or someone who works in the management portion of the dentist’s office.

It is up to you to weigh the pros and cons of joining this organization before you fill out the application and submit your $110 dollar membership fee. You need to know what your money covers and what you get in return.

The American Dental Assistants Association, otherwise know as the ADAA, has been around for over eighty years and is a professional organization that is recognized for its dedication to helping certified dental care assistants everywhere. They offer a wide range of benefits, such as medical insurance, discounts on travel, discounts on car rentals and much, much more. The membership only costs one hundred and ten dollars and that is for an entire year.

If you have gone through the medical technician classes, then you may be thinking about becoming a registered dental assistant with the ADAA. It pays to be a member of the group but the reality is that the pay is not really going to be influenced very much by that little piece of paper that says you are registered. Most small practices cannot afford to pay their employees the same amount of money that bigger dental practices can pay.

Assistants needed in the field of dentistry are in top demand. If you are thinking about becoming certified, then you will be practically guaranteed a job no matter where you go.

Even if you never take a medical technician training program, you may be able to get a job that offers on the job training. You may even consider going on in your education and becoming a dental hygienist or a dentist. Have you given any thought to becoming an oral surgeon?

A registered dental assistant with the American Dental Assistants Association does have a great support group. They can help you find the job of your dreams as well as provide you with the necessary information you might require to take the examinations and stay abreast of current medical news. Once you become a member of this organization you are also given the opportunity, should you decide to go back to school, to apply for their scholarship.
