It is always great when someone decides to go back to school and learn a new trade. This is especially true of individuals who have been in the workforce for several years in a minimum wage job and are looking for a rewarding career. Dental assistants schools are a way to help them break free from that minimum wage lifestyle and become a dedicated professional. But do you know the difference between the types of programs and colleges?

A big trend is for college dental assistant programs to be offered. These are traditional four year colleges that offer dental hygienist and assistant courses. A hygienist is someone who has taken more classes and can assist in oral surgery.

They are not surgical technologists so make sure you do not confuse them because you do not want to get through the program and suddenly find out that you have made a mistake. You can, however, get your certification and later go back and take additional courses to get those degrees and become certified surgical techs or hygienists.

Some people elect to take four hour programs each day for a year. This works well if you have to work full time and cannot take the time to devote to a full class load. The down side is that the program takes longer. You will also have to factor in the time for internship at the end of the program.

Usually, an internship requires that you be on the job for a full eight hours each day. Dental assistants schools that are online can save you time because they allow you to do your coursework from home at your own pace.

You can find financial aid to help offset the cost of tuition and books for the program. You will have to provide your income information and your income tax forms from the previous year. The financial aid officer of the school can help you fill out the forms.

Any excess aid can help you make your bills while you are in school. You may not be eligible for federal student aid, such as Pell Grants, if you are attending an online school, so take this into consideration before applying.

Dental assistants schools are a great way to change the outcome of your life. You no longer have to be confined to a job that you hate. You can learn a valuable trade that is important to the healthcare system. Once you complete the dental assistant program you will leave the school a certified dental assistant and start your new career and life.

In the United States, Physician Assistants (PAs) are non-physician clinicians licensed to practice medicine with a physician’s supervision. This supervision, in most cases, need not be direct or on site and many PAs practice in remote or underserved areas in satellite clinics. PAs can treat patients and, in most states, prescribe medicine, and in some states in the US they carry a DEA number that gives them authority to prescribe controlled medications like narcotics. PAs in surgical practices also serve as first assists in surgery. PAs provide medical services that are reimbursed under Medicare and third party insurances.

Physician Assistants held about 65,000 jobs in 2005. The number of jobs is greater than the number of practicing PAs because some hold two or more jobs. For example, some PAs work with a supervising physician, but also work in another practice, clinic, or hospital. According to the American Academy of Physician Assistants, there were about 58,665 certified PAs in clinical practice as of January 2006.

Just over 56 percent of PAs worked in the offices and clinics of physicians in 2005, either allopathic or osteopathic. About 36 percent were employed by hospitals. The rest were mostly in public health clinics, nursing homes, schools, prisons, home health care agencies, and the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. According to the American Academy of Physician Assistants, about 17 percent of all PAs provide health care to rural communities and those with fewer than 20,000 residents, in which physicians may be in limited supply.

In 2006, there are more than 130 accredited PA programs in existence in the United States. They are all accredited by one body — the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). A majority of them are master’s degree programs (requiring GRE for entry), but some are available as an undergraduate major. A number of these undergraduate programs are making a transition to graduate level training.

A Physician Assistant may use the post-nominal initials PA, RPA, PA-C or RPA-C, where the R indicates Registered and the C indicates “Certified.” The “R” designation is unique to only a couple of states; most Physician Assistants use the PA-C. The certification is granted by one certifying body, the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners both provide similar services in most states, the major distinction being that nurse practitioners are registered nurses by trade. Nurse Practitioners require more training than physicians assistants, such as a Masters Degree in nursing. Both are also known as Advanced Practice Clinicians (APCs) or mid-level practitioners (MLPs).

PAs should not be confused with Medical Assistants, who perform routine clinical and clerical tasks in a physician’s office. A Medical Assistant (MA) is a multi-skilled allied healthcare practitioner who is competent in both a wide variety of clinical and laboratory procedures, as well as many administrative roles. Medical assistants have been described as healthcare’s most versatile, multifaceted professionals. Medical Assisting is an allied health profession whose practitioners function as members of the health care delivery team and perform administrative and clinical procedures.

Formal education of medical assistants usually occurs in vocational or technical institutes, community colleges, proprietary schools, or junior colleges. The course length usually ranges from 1 to 2 year programs, complete with externships. The curriculum presented must always be accredited if its graduates plan to become either certified or registered. In 2002, there were 495 medical assisting programs accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and about 170 accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education School (ABHES). Accreditation by either CAAHEP or ABHES usually requires that the schools curriculum provide sufficient classroom, lecture, and laboratory time (if applicable) to each of the courses below.

Administrative Courses

Computer Applications

Manual Recording of Patients’ Data

Scheduling Appointments

Certification is a voluntary process which is strongly backed by the AAMA and a number of other well respected certification bodies in the USA as a way to guarantee competency of a medical assistant at a job-entry level. However, in order to be eligible for certification one must attend a school which has been accredited by either CAAHEP or ABHES.

Certification is usually achieved by taking a test issued by the National Board of Medical Examiners and AAMA, or AMT, or NHA and is offered twice yearly, simultaneously, at over 200 different test sites across the United States.

Successful completion of the rather intense exam earns the taker the proper credentials to become a Certified Medical Assistant, or CMA. National certification is legally required in order for any medical assistant to adhere to CMA status. The title CMA then follows postnominally.

Recertification must occur every 5 years in order for one to maintain their credentials. There are two ways to do this; one may either continually earn continuing education hours by attending CMA meetings, conventions and seminars, or by completely retaking the initial exam to prove they still possess a certain level of knowledge.

A medical assistant may choose another possible credential over CMA, and become a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) instead. Again, credentialing is completely voluntary. The American Technologists (AMT) agency is responsible for certifying MAs who choose this course.

AMT first began offering this certification in 1972 on the months of June and November, through a computerized exam, much like the one offered by the AAMA. AMT therefore has its own conventions and committees, bylaws, state chapters, officers, registrations and revalidation examinations.

To become eligible to hold the title of RMA a student must be at least 18-years-old, pass a medical assisting curriculum at a school accredited by either ABHES or CAAHEP and possess a minimum of 5 years experience. The initials RMA then follow the individual’s name.

RMAs have historically been very active in legislation, seeking protection for medical assistants, as well as continuously encouraging improved educational curriculums.

Nursing Assistants are exposed to a wide variety of events taking place in the medical field. It is crucial that they are aware of the importance of maintaining confidentiality in all aspects of their job.

Nursing Assistants are well trained in the policies and procedures of the facility. While it is important to follow them, it is not recommended to discuss them outside of the facility. For example, you don’t want to provide others with confidential information regarding evacuation and other emergency procedures. Doing so many compromises the safety of the patients and staff during a natural disaster or violent attack.

Patients requiring care in a medical facility are to have their privacy protected. This means you do not discuss their care or other personal information with any other person except staff they have an interest in the care of that patient. Confidentiality becomes an issue when you know someone in the facility or someone asks you why someone else in there.

All patients have the right to their privacy being maintained. Compromising this information is a direct violation of every medical practice. Providing such information can result in termination of your job, and in some cases, the loss of your Nursing Assistant Certification.

Communicable diseases can surface in medical facilities. It is important that you follow the policies and procedures set in place by the particular facility your work with. However, do not release information regarding such diseases to anyone. This could result in a panic over the possibility of an epidemic, and lead to patients wanting to leave the facility against medical advice.

The proper medical staff will release information on communicable diseases to the proper agencies. Often this includes the area health department. They can then help the medical facility incorporate a plan of action to remedy the solution. The decision might be made to share the information with the area newspapers in an effort to allow them to protect themselves and to seek medical attention if they display the symptoms of a communicable disease that requires treatment.

Confidentiality also includes other medical staff. Nursing Assistants should not be disclosing any information they overhear among other staff in regards to a patient. Likewise, they should not disclose any information that they hear about the private interactions of staff.

Often referred to as gossip, this violation of confidentiality can result in poor working relationships. The result is often a stressful work environment and patients not receiving the best care because lines of communication are not open.

To protect yourself, it is important that you clearly understand the basics of confidentiality and why it is so important in the Nursing Assistant profession. Make sure you are fully aware of the specific policies and procedures in place for the facility you work for prior to accepting employment.

In addition, it is the responsibility of the Nursing Assistant to report any violations of the confidentiality policies and procedures to the proper person. Not doing so makes you as much a part of the violation as those who committed it.

While it is human nature to talk and discuss things in common, make sure the information you are sharing in regards to your work are being shared with those who need to know the information. It can be humiliating enough for individuals who need to be in a medical facility without worrying about who is going to find out about what took place while they were in care.

The rise in demand for oral hygiene in the United States hasn’t only opened up doors for more dentists, but dentist assistants too are profiting from the rise in demand. With a booming industry to back it, a career as a dental assistant is seeing more and more advancement opportunities opening up. Dental assistant are required for a variety of tasks including patient care, work in the laboratory and clerical work. A dental assistant’s job begins as soon as the patient walks in, after comforting the patient and handing the doctor the patient’s records the patient is prepared for treatment. The dental assistant then works alongside the dentist as he examines the patient, providing all the necessary materials and instruments, while also performing some basic procedures such as suction to keep the patients mouth clear. Additionally the assistant also disinfects and sterilizes the equipment and instruments, prepare the trays and inform the patient about basic oral healthcare and things to do after an operation. For well-experienced dental assistants there are a number of dental assistant opportunities available.

Some dental assistants become involved in more procedures as they gain knowledge and experience. For example some assistants prepare restoration and impression materials and are even involved in the taking and processing of dental x-rays. For those looking for further responsibilities there are openings in the removing of sutures, making casts using impressions, or even making temporary crowns. Others get more involved in the logistics of the organization and maintain patient records, appointments and order dental supplies.

Others can opt to continue their education and choose a career path as a dental hygienist. Dental hygienists receive many more responsibilities, including examining a patient’s teeth and gums and then giving their opinion on any abnormalities or disease. They also handle the removal of any deposits, plaque, stains or calculus and are involved in providing other oral healthcare. Some are even involved in conducting diagnostic tests in the clinic and laboratory. There are many other opportunities for advancement also available, including becoming occupational therapist aides, medical assistants, pharmacy technicians, physical therapist assistants or can even choose to continue their education and become dentists.

The field is expected to grow at an above average rate over the next decade, meaning that their career advancement opportunities are plentiful. With the demand for healthcare services constantly on the rise, there are many openings for dental assistants. Fueled by employment growth and a fast turnover rate through the retirement of old dental assistants and the number who switch careers, there are many job openings. The best part is that as dental healthcare keeps improving, people tend to keep their teeth for even longer, meaning that older people are now retaining their teeth and demanding further dental care. The number of patients is thus consistently on the rise and career opportunities for dental assistants are looking very good.

Most Dental Assistants work hard to ensure the best quality treatment available to all patients. However, there are those who don’t live up to the expectations of the patient. The patient has the right to address this issue with the dental facility. If they do not feel their complaint has been properly handled, they can then file a complaint with the State Dental Board.

State Dental Boards are responsible for regulating dental practices. They work hard to protect the public against improper behaviours by Dental Assistants, Dental Hygienists, and Dentists. They are to thoroughly investigate all complaints filed that involve competency. State Dental Boards do not handle complaints such as fee disputes, personality conflicts, rude behaviours, or difficulty with scheduling appointments in a timely manner. Such issues are to be referred to the Better Business Bureau.

It is important to file a complaint with the State Dental Board as soon as possible to allow then to be of the most help. Most states allow you to file your complaint online, over the phone, or you can request a form be sent to you in the mail. Some states will only accept a complaint in writing.

Dental Assistants need to be aware of the process that patients can go through if they have a complaint. Dental Assistants need to be cooperative during the investigation. If a Dental Assistant feels a patient may file a complaint, it is important to write down as much information as possible. This information needs to include the patient’s name, date, time, and what took place. Also document any verbal interactions and who all was present to observe the incident. This information will be very useful to you and to the State Dental Board.

The Dental Board works hard to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. However, it will not rush the efforts to investigate it properly. Some complaints are resolved in a matter of days while others linger for years. Once a complaint has been filed, a copy of it is sent to the dental facility for a response. Generally, the dental facility is given a specific time frame to have their response back to the State Dental Board.

Once the response is received and reviewed, the Dental Board will compare the information to that on the complaint. From there, a course of action will be mapped out. This generally involved conducting interviews of all parties present during the incident. A panel is set up to investigate if any dental laws were violated. If there appears to be a violation, a hearing will be scheduled. The Dental Assistant will be notified as well as required to show up for the hearing.

If the Dental Assistant is found to be in violation of dental laws, the Dental Board will issue a reprimand. This will depend on the state guidelines as well as the violation. Reprimands may include a letter of apology, suspension, probation, or even revocation of the Dental Assistant’s license. The Dental Board is not allowed to require monetary compensation. If the person filing the complaint wants to be compensated in that manner, they will need to file a civil suit with their local judicial system.

Dental Assistants who find themselves in the middle of a complaint issue with the Dental Board are likely to experience anxiety and fear. Many dental facilities will provide the individual with counseling as well as legal consultation. In most cases, it will depend on the issue the Dental Board is investigating. If the dental facility backs the Dental Assistant they will do all they can? However, if they feel the Dental Assistant is in violation of dental regulations they may terminate the individual, leaving them to pay for their own defence.

It is the responsibility of the Dental Assistant to follow all policies and procedures correctly. If you have any doubt, take the time to have everything explained to you. Losing a complaint under the Dental Board can cost you your job, as well as your career. If you lose your license, you may find it difficult to obtain another job in the profession as a Dental Assistant. Making sure you follow policies and procedures will ensure that you have a good chance of winning such complaints upon a complete review and investigation by the Dental Board.

A career as a Dental Assistant will open many doors of opportunity. Dental Assistants will be among the highest growing occupations from now until 2012. This is because people are starting to take a better interest in their oral health. Technological advances have led many individuals to the dentist office for cosmetic dental procedures rather than just cleanings and major dental work. Also, people are living longer, so their teeth need more care to stay healthy throughout their life.

The most common place of employment to find Dental Assistants is in the dental office. Here they provide a variety of services. They often help to comfort scared patients prior to procedures as well as give them follow up care at the end of the appointment. Dental Assistants clean the tools used as well as make sure each work unit has the necessary tools and equipment ready for the next patient’s procedures.

Dental Assistants in the dental office work very closely with Dentists and Hygienists. They often sit in on all procedures, handing staff the necessary tools. Dentist offices are generally small so Dental Assistants often help with lab work. This includes making molds of teeth for caps, bridges, and other dental work. They may also be required to assist with the taking of X-rays.

A common place for Dental Assistants to be employed is in prisons. With more and more prisons being built all over the Nation, Dental Assistants are in great demand for Federal, State, and privately owned prisons. Working as a dental assistant in a prison setting requires more caution that in a regular dental office.

All Nursing Assistants need to be aware of the risk of communicable diseases that are transmitted via saliva and blood. However, the rate of these diseases, especially HIV, is much higher with a prison population than the general public. Also, some inmates might try to attack by biting.

Nursing Assistants in a prison setting need to be alert, and never let down their guard, inmates often look for any opportunity to escape or obtain weapons. They can use a dental tool as a weapon against you, other staff, or other inmates. It is very important that you keep very close track of all dental tools in a prison setting. Never leave a tool in the reach of an inmate for even a moment. If you discover a tool is missing, immediately notify your supervisor and follow the procedures outlined in the prison policy.

For those Dental Assistants wanting to help the lower income populations, securing employment in a Child Development Center, Head Start, or Migrant program is an excellent way of giving back to the community. Often, these populations can’t afford dental care and would go without it if the services weren’t offered as part of a government program. Employment in these types of agencies as a Dental Assistant often pays less than other employment opportunities in the field. However, many Dental Assistants make the choice to help those in need rather than earn more money.

There are many opportunities to work as a Dental Assistant for agencies who serve the disabled. Often, Dental Assistants are afraid to work with such a population. However, once you feel comfortable with disabled people and their disabilities, you will be able to provide proper care to those who are in need, regardless of their mental capacity or physical appearance.

A career as a Dental Assistant offers you many areas of employment including dental offices, prisons, low income programs, and for facilities who serve the disabled. The ability to choose the type of environment you want to use your Dental Assistant skills in makes the field even more inviting. If you are not sure if a particular type of agency is a good fit for you, talk to them. Ask if you can shadow another Dental Assistant who works there for a few days. This should give you plenty of exposure to the activities that take place in that agency.

There is little doubt that the healthcare field is in desperate need of help. Hospitals, hospices, nursing homes and rehabilitation clinics need nurses to be able to function in any way. Nursing assistants are in the greatest demand.

They are responsible for most of the day-to-day care of patients. Their job duties are varied depending on skill but there is a real need for qualified nursing assistants all over the world. If you are curious about the career of a nursing assistant, this article is for you.

What about background checks?

Background checks are at the discretion of the employer. Many healthcare facilities have learned how invaluable background checks are to ensure their patient’s safety. A background check can turn up if the employee has a criminal record as well as if there were any cases of abuse opened up against him or her.

A criminal background check has become standard in the workplace for businesses that deal with patients or the public but often do not cover medical backgrounds unless the individual is registered with the state.

What job duties does a nursing assistant have?

Nursing assistants perform the most day-to-day living care. They can dispense medication, draw blood, provide sanitary care and even run errands for the patient if it is a home health situation.

Nursing assistants are the backbone of the healthcare industry. They are the ones who are often the primary care givers when the family cannot do so. They also provide emotional care to patients.

What kinds of questions do they ask on the nursing assistant examination?

There are two parts to the examination. The first is a written exam and the second is demonstrating that you have the required skills necessary to be licensed and caring for a patient. Testing varies according to each state’s health board but there are some common items covered.

These items include: helping a patient dress, ethics, privacy act and even on which side to stand on if a patient is walking down the hall. It is not always about knowing medical terminology. Much of a nursing assistant’s day is providing routine care for a patient so it is important that the assistant be able to be able to help dress, bathe and feed a patient.

How much do nursing assistants make?

That is a hard question to pin down exactly. There are many things that factor into a nursing assistant’s pay. The first is whether or not he or she is licensed. The second is where the place of employment is.

Nursing homes pay generally less than hospitals do because they do not have the budget to pay top dollar to their employees. The third factor is what hours and shift the nursing assistant works. Assistants that work the “graveyard” shift (from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.) generally make at least thirty cents more an hour than day shift employees.

I have an elderly relative who needs care during the day; can I hire a nursing assistant rather than a nurse?

Most home health agencies have a few nurses to oversee medical conditions but employ nursing assistants to come in and care for the patients during the day. If you do not want to go through an agency and intend to pay for the care out of your own pocket, hiring a nursing assistant is a great way to have quality care and companionship for your relative. You will have to do the background check yourself though if you elect not to use an agency.
